Ask which use the plan is considering
As of September 26, 2026, Medicare’s drug benefit generally excludes medicines used for weight loss.
Some medicines can have coverage for other accepted uses; the plan’s list of medicines and its approval process still determine coverage.
Name the exact product when asking your plan, and explain why the person providing care proposes it. A broad answer about “longevity” leaves too much unclear.
Translate the plan’s payment terms
A formulary is the list a plan uses to decide which medicines it covers.
In your coverage notes, “prior authorization” means the plan’s agreement to pay before a prescription is covered.
Ask who sends the request, what records are needed and what you would pay if the plan declines.
Understand the temporary Medicare route
As of September 26, 2026, the Medicare Bridge is a short-term programme for certain weight medicines; eligible people have a $50 monthly copayment.
A copayment is the part the patient pays.
The programme closes December 31, 2027, after a July 1, 2026 opening. Its payment process is separate from your usual Medicare drug plan’s process. In 2026, one central service handles approval requests and payments to pharmacies.
Have the person who prescribes your medicine check the Bridge rules and send the required approval request.
Its eligibility depends on the person’s plan, health conditions, treatment history and the prescribed product; it is not open to every Medicare member.
With type 2 diabetes, the coverage instructions send you to the ordinary drug route instead of the Bridge.
Your usual Medicare drug plan limits what you pay for covered medicines in a year. Your $50 Bridge payment each month does not count towards that yearly limit. Extra payment help for people with low incomes and discount coupons cannot reduce the Bridge payment.
Get the answer for your own plan
Ask the plan to separate what it pays from what you pay. Ask the practice for the visit and test charges as well.
Keep a record of the answer and the care it applies to. If the proposal changes, ask the payment question again.
