Find a route

Start with the question you have

The first useful note is your aim, not a treatment name.

Put the aim in ordinary words

Write what you want help with. For example, ask how to discuss a concern about getting older. If a symptom brought you here, describe it rather than guessing its cause.

Ask someone who already provides your care

Bring the note to a doctor, nurse or other health professional you already see. Ask which kind of care fits the question and whether they can suggest someone.

Start with a board if you need a public record

State doctor-licensing bodies can be reached through links from the Federation of State Medical Boards, a medical-board group.

A board route is useful when you have a name to check. It does not tell you whether that doctor fits your aim.

Use a direct search to find a name

Try the care question alongside your town or state. Read the page for a person’s name, the kind of visit offered and the terms of payment.

Keep the same questions when comparing pages. A long menu of treatments does not answer what a visit would involve.
