Find a route

Ask for a route, not just a name

Tell the doctor, nurse or other person providing care why you want a referral.

Explain what brought you here

Describe the concern in your own words. Say what you hope a visit would help you understand. If you found a treatment online, bring the page or write down its name.

Ask why that route fits

Ask what the suggested person would need to find out. Ask whether the visit is for an opinion, an examination or a discussion of a proposed treatment.

Write down the reason for the referral beside the name. That gives you something concrete to ask about when you approach the practice.

Ask what to bring

Ask whether the next person providing care wants records, previous test results or a note from the person who referred you. Ask who will send those records.

Check the name after the referral

A referral gives you a name to check. Look up that person’s public licence record and ask your own questions about the visit.

The doctor’s public board record can include licence status and action taken against the doctor.
